Once players in a region become accustomed to Fargo Ratings, the ratings become at the center of discussions of player ability. While Fargo ratings are defined by relative performance, the ratings very much take on an absolute meaning. And a byproduct is each of these groups knows exactly where it stands relative to the others. The result is a system that is as useful for rating two-dozen players in a small-town league as it is for rating players in a regional tournament tour as it is for rating world-class completion. And a new rating optimization, coupling everybody together around the globe, is performed every day. Games are added to our dataset every day. A group of players who are well coupled to one another, like in a local league, can become coupled to the rest of the world by a few players or even a single player playing outside the group. That is, the two win games in a 2:1 ratio and thus are separated by about 100 points. For instance, a new player who consistently wins 2 out of 3 games against a 350 is performing like a 450. A 50-point gap predicts a 5:7 win ratio.Ī new player can establish a rating by performance against an opponent of any rating. Two players with a 34-point gap, like a 530 and a 564, will win games in a 4:5 ratio. When two players are 100 points apart, say a 300 versus a 400, the ratio of game wins will be near 1:2, as in 5 games to 10 games, or 50 games to 100 games.Ī 200-point gap leads to a game win ratio of 1:4Ī 300-point gap leads to a game win ratio of 1:8Ī 400-point gap leads to a game win ratio of 1:16 If the two players play multiple games, they will tend to win them in a ratio of 1:1 (one to one). Two players with the same rating, i.e., a 300 and another 300, or a 600 and another 600, have equal chances of winning a game between them. The rating difference between two players determines the chance each will win a game. There is no top and no bottom to the scale. Most people who play pool in leagues and tournaments are between these ranges, i.e., between 200 and 700. A random company holiday party might have many players rated between 50 and 200. Professional players generally have ratings between 700 and 800. Optical astronomers use both angstroms (0.00000001 cm, or 10 -8 cm) and nanometers (0.0000001 cm, or 10 -7 cm). Infrared astronomers use microns (millionths of a meter) for wavelengths, so their part of the EM spectrum falls in the range of 1 to 100 microns. Infrared and optical astronomers generally use wavelength. The radio is a very broad part of the EM spectrum. Most of the radio part of the EM spectrum falls in the range from about 1 cm to 1 km, which is 30 gigahertz (GHz) to 300 kilohertz (kHz) in frequencies. It is much easier to say or write "two kilometers" than "two thousand meters." Generally, scientists use whatever units are easiest for the type of EM radiation they work with.Īstronomers who study radio waves tend to use wavelengths or frequencies. The short answer is that scientists don't like to use numbers any bigger or smaller than they have to. But why have three ways of describing things, each with a different set of physical units?Ĭomparison of wavelength, frequency and energy for the electromagnetic spectrum. Each of these three quantities for describing EM radiation are related to each other in a precise mathematical way. Frequency is measured in cycles per second, or Hertz. Radio waves have photons with low energies, microwave photons have a little more energy than radio waves, infrared photons have still more, then visible, ultraviolet, X-rays, and, the most energetic of all, gamma-rays.Įlectromagnetic radiation can be expressed in terms of energy, wavelength, or frequency. The different types of radiation are defined by the the amount of energy found in the photons. Each photon contains a certain amount of energy. Radio waves, gamma-rays, visible light, and all the other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are electromagnetic radiation.Įlectromagnetic radiation can be described in terms of a stream of mass-less particles, called photons, each traveling in a wave-like pattern at the speed of light. The biggest gamma-ray generator of all is the Universe.Īre radio waves completely different physical objects than gamma-rays? They are produced in different processes and are detected in different ways, but they are not fundamentally different. Gamma ray: Doctors use gamma-ray imaging to see inside your body. Hot gases in the Universe also emit X-rays. X-ray: A dentist uses X-rays to image your teeth, and airport security uses them to see through your bag. "Hot" objects in space emit UV radiation as well. Ultraviolet: Ultraviolet radiation is emitted by the Sun and are the reason skin tans and burns. Fireflies, light bulbs, and stars all emit visible light. In space, infrared light helps us map the dust between stars. Infrared: Night vision goggles pick up the infrared light emitted by our skin and objects with heat. Microwave: Microwave radiation will cook your popcorn in just a few minutes, but is also used by astronomers to learn about the structure of nearby galaxies. Radio waves are also emitted by stars and gases in space. Radio: Your radio captures radio waves emitted by radio stations, bringing your favorite tunes. Hecht declined to comment Boyd has not responded to a request for comment. The two justices who heard the case while campaigning are Chief Justice Nathan L. In June, it sided with Apache and against the jury’s findings, concluding that the company was going to fire Davis before she complained about discrimination. This time, the Supreme Court, upon reconsideration, agreed to hear the case. Two weeks later, Apache filed its motion for rehearing. “As long as Texas continues to use an election system to select our judges, it is imperative that voters be well informed about their choices,” she said. They were the only races on which the new organization spent money.Īlthough the Judicial Fairness PAC funded only the Supreme Court races last year, in the future it plans to participate in judicial races at all levels, said Texans for Lawsuit Reform spokeswoman Lucy Nashed. Funded heavily by Texans for Lawsuit Reform, which has contributed lavishly in its efforts to rein in large jury awards, among other aims, the PAC spent a total of $4.5 million supporting the four candidates. Over the next several days, the Judicial Fairness PAC spent $750,000 on television and radio ads supporting the incumbent Texas Supreme Court justices, records show. Yet there is a loophole: Unlike with direct contributions, there is no ceiling on how much money the groups can spend independently on behalf of candidates. Texas law limits how much PACs can contribute to judicial candidates. GRID RULING : Texas Supreme Court punts on whether ERCOT is immune from storm lawsuits The contribution appears to be just the second Apache has made in a judicial race the other was for $2,500 and was made nearly a decade ago. But state records show the donation to the PAC dwarfed its previous gifts. The Fortune 600 oil company has given money to political candidates before. Three weeks after the court’s denial of the appeal, Apache donated $250,000 to a newly formed political action committee, Judicial Fairness PAC. (In all, four were up for election but two recused themselves from the case because they had worked on Apache v. Few hardy ferns have this beautiful deep, glossy green foliage. However, during the winter months the fronds tend to lie flat on the ground. The fronds grow one to two feet tall and are dependably evergreen. They are adapted to a wide range of conditions, from dry to moist, and are hardy to Zone 3. There are so many ferns that I cannot mention them all but I have to mention Christmas ferns (Polystichum acrostichoides) because they are a staple in my garden. It is a Proven Winner plant that I will have to try one day. It is said to be vigorous and a little taller variety that would fit into the middle of the border. It is similar in color to a traditional Japanese Painted Fern, but the tips of the fronds are double crested. It was a Japanese painter fern called ‘Crested Surf’. I saw a fern the other day that I have not grown but looked interesting. I will say that it is planted near some rocks that I am sure held some heat that helped them survive. They are hardy in zones 6 to 10 and this past winter when we had 6-degree weather the day before Christmas, mine survived. The leathery, shiny-green fronds grow to about 2 -3 feet and add a completely different texture than other ferns. Often when people are walking in the garden in the winter, I am asked about my holly ferns which got its name because of the pointed tips of the leaves. It is supposed to have a more dramatic look than ‘Brilliance’ that I have grown for a few years. The other new fern I added this year is ‘Koidzumiana’ which boast brilliant russet red in the fall color. ‘Brilliance’, ‘Koidzumiana’, ‘Gold Mist’ are three of the newer ones that boast more color. The new fronds are a lovely copper color as they emerge and the fall color can be dramatic, depending on which one you buy. They are easy to grow and they make a two-foot-wide clump in a short time. These ferns are the rage now and for good reason. They like dappled light and moisture.Īnother favorite are the autumn ferns. Some people say maidenhair ferns are too hard to grow and are too finicky but if you find the right spot, they do great. I love the northern maidenhair and this year I have splurged and bought a new one called 'Bermuda Run' that was found in Bermuda which I bought from Plant Delights. I have discovered some Southern maidenhair ferns that will winter over where I live but most are a little too tender for my climate. However, if I had to choose just one, I would probably pick one of the many maidenhair (Adiantum) ferns. I have lots of favorite ferns, it is hard to say which is the best because some are perfect for one area and then another might look best in another location. Begonias and Impatients are shade loving plants that work in nicely with ferns. Ferns look great as a background to different brightly colored annuals if you tend to want to add other colors to you shade garden. Spacing should depend on the type of fern since some are mat-forming and will quickly spread to blanket an area while others are self-contained and can be used as specimen plants among mixed plantings.įerns fit in nicely with other shade plants like Hostas, Astilbes, Heuchera, Hellebores and other shade classics. Think about how they grow in the forest and try to mimic their habitat, using soil that is a loamy with lots of leaf mold and which is both moist and well-drained. The dabbled shade provided by tree branches provide the best conditions. Most ferns like shade but a few will tolerate more sun. A single plant can drop millions of spores onto the ground, yet only a few will actually find the ideal conditions to grow. They propagate via spores that are like small dots on the underside of the fronds (or leaves). There are so many different species of ferns that they are a unique category of plants. And, if this is not enough to wet your appetite, the deer do not eat them.įerns have been in existence for more than 300 million years. They come in different shades of green and others turn bronze or yellow in the fall. Some are glossy, others are dull, some are evergreen while others are deciduous. You can have short ones like resurrection fern or large ones like the ostrich fern. Ferns can have a delicate texture like the maidenhair ferns or be coarse and thick like holly ferns. They come in all shapes, sizes, and textures and because of the diversity of ferns, there is one that will fit about any garden. Ferns are the perfect plant to add to a shade garden. (Set the Feather either in the Options Bar across the top of the screen, or choose the menu: Select > Feather. You could also use the Lasso (Tap L) set with an appropriate Feather. Using the Eraser Tool (Tap E) set to a large, soft brush, we then erased all the image except the area around the face we wanted to show. (Ignore the second layer for now, we'll get to that in a moment.) Layer Blending Modes are found in a drop-down button near the top of the Layer Palette just above the tools. Slide your Opacity slider until you achieve the desired strength. We simply pulled it in and set its layer Blending Mode to "Multiply" - ghosting the face into the background. Our first "face" is in the upper right-hand corner. It will open in a separate browser window you can keep open to the side while you are reading. At this point you'll probably want to open the full diagram to follow along. In our example, we started with one of the larger images because it had lots of dark areas, and other lighter areas where we could add other images for today's presentation. Move the layer around until the portion you wish to use is in position in relation with the base image. Set the transparency of the layer to around 50% so you can see both the base image and the current layer at the same time. This let's you concentrate on just the one image. Do this by clicking on the "Eye" icons in the left column of the layers palette. Turn off all the layer images except the first one to be merged. Once you have all your files imported, it's a good idea to save the file as a PSD file. Observe that as they arrive in the base file a new layer will be produced. Use the Move Tool (Tap V) and one-by-one drag each image to be added into the base file. Show the Layers Palette and open each file to be added This wards off any problems once you begin assemblage.Ĭreate the base Photoshop file to the size and resolution needed for output. Getting started with merging photos using this method will get you up and running in no time and will open your vision to lots and lots of possibilities using this way-too-simple technique. So I picked out these to illustrate the following easy way to. He passed over a folder of photos trapped in his spam filters, and shucks, we figured if the spammers sent the photos to the address intended for submissions, that means we can use them. Pixelsmith said: "Here, take these and just use layer blending modes." I was complaining about how much time it takes to put an article together- finding the appropriate photos to use, running the process, documentation and gathering screen captures - when Mr. Actually layer masking is by far the best method to learn, however my layer masking seminar isn't quite complete yet. One of the more frequent questions we receive is how to bring photos together for montage or collage. Like home theater models, these mini projectors need a darker environment you can't really see TV shows or movies in a brighter room, especially with larger screen sizes. That reduces brightness, thus limiting the size of an acceptable image. Because all of these projectors lack a zoom feature, to increase the size of the picture you have to move them farther from the screen. In our tests, which involved test patterns as well as TV shows and movies, the biggest differentiator was image brightness, which affects not only image quality but also the size of the image you want to present. In general, we found you get what you pay for, both in terms of image quality and features, though we did find a bargain in the bunch. Some have a built-in rechargeable battery for go-anywhere portability, while others require AC power. The Vankyo uses LCD technology, where light is sent through a prism and filters before hitting the lens.Īll the models except one come with a remote control, and a few have a carrying case that made toting them a bit easier. All of the models except one were DLP projectors-where the light is reflected off a chip with a vast array of tiny mirrors-so some people may notice "rainbows," or momentary flashes of colored light on certain dark scenes. Most were tabletop models, but there was also a micro-sized cube that fits in a pocket.Ĭompared with the full-sized models people install in home theaters, these smaller versions typically have fewer user controls and picture adjustments. The ones in our test ranged from about $120 to $450. Prices for these projectors can start below $100. "But many offer decent brightness and picture quality, plus a level of portability that will let you take them almost anywhere." "These mini projectors are not necessarily intended to compete with full-sized home theater projectors," says Claudio Ciacci, the TV-testing program leader at CR who oversaw the projector project. One option to get started is to set up and maintain a validator node on the blockchain. The specific method depends on an investor’s level of technical expertise, the amount of cryptocurrency they want to stake, and their preferred level of control. There are numerous ways to stake cryptocurrencies. Users who want to participate in that network would need to acquire the specific staking currency in order to participate. Similarly, if a new PoS blockchain network is launched, it will likely introduce a new cryptocurrency as the staking currency for that network. This staking currency is typically the native currency of the blockchain network.įor example, if a PoS blockchain is built on Ethereum, the staking currency would be ether. How Does Staking Work in Crypto?Įach PoS blockchain network has a specific staking currency used to participate in the staking process. This is one of the reasons the Ethereum network has migrated from PoW to PoS in a set of technical upgrades collectively referred to as ETH 2.0. Some might argue that the production of blocks through staking enables a higher degree of scalability for blockchains. If a node wants to stop being a forger, its stake and earned rewards are released after a period, giving the network time to verify that no fraudulent blocks have been added to the blockchain by the node. As a reward, the node receives the transaction fees from the block and, on some blockchains, a coin reward. It then signs the block and adds it to the blockchain. When a node is selected to forge the next block, it verifies that the transactions in the block are valid. In PoS, blocks are forged rather than mined. While ASIC mining requires a significant investment in hardware, and energy to run mining operations, staking requires an investment in the cryptocurrency itself. PoS allows blocks to be produced without relying on specialized mining hardware, such as ASICs. However, each PoS cryptocurrency has its own set of rules and methods that it has combined to create what it believes to be the best possible combination for the network and its users. This mechanism can combine various factors, such as the age of the stake, randomization, and the wealth of the node. The PoS algorithm uses a pseudo-random selection process to select validators from a group of nodes. Individuals can usually still access their staked coins but may only be able to use them for other purposes once they are no longer staked. Staking coins makes users' holdings less liquid because the coins are tied up in the staking process. PoS differs from the proof-of-work (PoW) used in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, where miners use computing power to validate transactions. Staking is only possible on blockchains such as Ethereum and Cardano based on a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. When someone stakes their coins, they are essentially helping to secure the chain and validate transactions on the blockchain. Staking is a process by which individuals lock their cryptocurrency (their “stake”) to support the security and operation of a blockchain network. Staking has become a popular way for crypto investors to grow their holdings without selling their digital assets.Ĭrypto staking involves a unique set of risks that can result in a loss of funds.
